basis of the printing process. A flat stone such as limestone or a metal plate is treated so that the image area attracts
oil-based inks and wet non-image areas repel the oil-base inks.

surface of the paper to create the image. Single, multi-level, beveled, and sculptured are the styles of embossing.
Embossing can be done on plain paper or combined with ink, images, or foil for special effect. Graphics software can
simulate the three-dimensional look of embossing.
Flexography
Frequently used for printing on plastics, foil, acetate film, brown paper, and other materials used in packaging,
flexography is also known as flexographic printing or flexo. Some typical applications for flexography are paper and
plastic bags, milk cartons,disposable cups, and candy bar wrappers. Flexography printing may also be used for
envelopes, labels, and newspapers.

The process that applies a luminous pearl-like finish to part of an invitation, usually to an embossed design, is called
pearlizing.
Silkscreen
Screen (or silkscreen, as it is sometimes called) printing primarily uses a hand or electronically-prepared stencil. The
part to be printed is made up of silk, nylon or a stainless-steel mesh. Ink can pass through this area but not the other
part of the stencil which is contained inside a frame. The printing surface is placed under the frame on a flat surface.
The impression is made by forcing the ink through the screen area with a rubber squeegee.
Thermography
Thermography produces raised printing similar in appearance to engraving but using a different process. In
thermography, a special powder is added to the ink printed on the paper. The printed piece is heated and the powder
and ink mixture dries to form a raised effect on the paper.
Examples: Used for wedding invitations, fine stationery, sometimes business cards and letterheads, the raised
effect of engraving is similar in appearance to thermography without the glossy look, but the cost is generally higher.
Engraving is a form of intaglio printing.
